My name is Britni Coffey and I am excited to be your child's 4th grade teacher this year. Our building will hold Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday August 17 from 6-7PM. Students are welcome to bring their supplies in that evening. A school supply list should have been included with the teacher letter that you received in the mail. If you did not receive one, they are available on the school district website.
Another important event before school starts is the Willard East Family Pool Party. This will be on Wednesday August 16 from 7-9PM. Bring your family and come swim with your friends! I look forward to meeting you and partnering with you this school year to help make your child's year a successful one! My primary form of communication will be through Seesaw. That platform should be set up for you by the beginning of the school year so please download the app if you haven't already. If you ever have any questions or need to contact me for any reason my email is [email protected]. Have a wonderful last 2 weeks of summer!

Monday: PJ day Tuesday: Future Career Day Wednesday: Western Wear Thursday: Dress in 80's attire Friday: Willard Wear Math: Last week we wrapped up additio and subtraction and moved in to multiplication. Many students are not fluent in their multiplication facts and this is going to start affecting their ability to be successful with math. I have highly encouraged them to work on their math facts and even sent home flash cards with them over the weekend. We are starting a multiplication challenge in the classroom on Monday and when they complete a level they will get to mark it off on the class list. When they complete all of their fact familiies they will have a celebration. Science: We started erosion last week and we will continue that topic this week. We have been looking at different means of erosion and what happens as different surfaces erode and the weathering process that contributes to it. Reading: We are reading Tiger Rising and really digging deep in to the text to analyze the characters. The students are then doing the same in their independent book to practice getting the most they can from the author as they read about their story. We are continuing to practice using our time wisely and really reading for meaning and understanding the whole time we are reading. Writing: Students have been drafting characters for their narrative stories. This week we will begin drafting scene by scene and really work on adding detail and dialogue to our stories. The students have some amazing ideas started and I am excited to see how they end up. Last week you should have received your childs DRA letter with their current reading level. If you have any questions about that level please don't hesitate to contact me. Have a wonderful week! I hope you guys had a wonderful long weekend and had some time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine!! It was definitely HOT!!!
This week is short but it is going to be busy for the kids. They are going to use a lot of brain power this week. It is important that all the kids have ear buds or headphones this week. So if your child hasn't brought in headphones and you are not able to supply them please let me know and I will take care of trying to get them some by Wednesday. We will be taking the first set of NWEA tests this week. This is a baseline test at the beginning of the year and we will use this data to help the kids set goals and track growth through 4th grade. This is not a test they need to study for it is simply a standardized test that will show us where they are in math in reading. Math: We will use math time to take the NWEA this week and then we will reteach and reassess Topic 1 on Friday. I have graded the math tests from Friday and they were decent but some are still struggling. So we will take some time to go back over those topics and give them a chance to reassess. I will message on Seesaw when I send tests home. I have a couple of students that still have to take their assessment so I will wait to pass them out all at once. Writing: We will continue working on our first narrative story. We are completing our rough draft and will start the editing process later this week. Science: We are wrapping up our animal presentations and will be moving on to plants. We will look at the different parts of a plant and the significance to their survival. Be looking for a Seesaw activity showing what they have learned about animals early this week. Reading: We will discover students independent reading levels. Once I have determined all students reading levels I will send them home so you too are aware where they fall at the start of 4th grade, as well as where they should be. Leader in Me: Students will be challenged with a Kindness BINGO board this week. They will see if they can complete enough random acts of kindness to blackout their entire board. So be looking for great help around the house! :) I hope you have a wonderful week! As always if you have any questions or concerns please reach out at any time. We made it through week 1! I had a great time getting to know all of your kids and I can't wait to share my year with them! If you haven't signed up for SeeSaw yet I would highly encourage you to do so. I post pictures there as we do class activities and the kids post assignments there that you can see and comment on. Last week they did a great video recording of themselves talking about germs and how hand sanitizer can kill the germs. If you haven't seen it yet go check it out! This is what we are going to do this week....
Math: We will continue looking at place value. We will also be using place value to compare numbers and evaluate the value of digits in a number. We will have a small assessment on Friday over this topic. Science: We are going to learn about animals this week and analyze the difference between vertibrates and invertibrates. Writing: We will continue working on the kids narrative story ideas that they came up with last week and get them put on paper. Reading: We will continue to build our reading stamina and talk about ways to track our reading. We will also discuss ways to respond to our reading using journals. We will have extra PE on Tuesday this week and regular PE on Wednesday so be sure and have your student wear tennis shoes. Also, please remind them to charge their chromebook nightly and always bring it back to school the next day. It's going to be a great week! Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!! I am so excited to get back in the classroom and get to know your student! It's going to be a great year of memories and growth for each one of us.
This blog will be used to post class updates and reminders. I will use this as a way to communicate with you about events and learning that are happening in our classroom. Please don't ever hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Students wrapped up a Declaration of Independence writing project last week. They each published a slide on our class slideshow that I will link below.
Declaration of Independence Slide Show Math: Last week we wrapped up our division unit and students did really well on the assessment. We are now working on word problems. Science: We are starting a unit on rocks this week and will carry it through Thanksgiving break. Reading: We are continuing with non-fiction and finding the main idea. Students have been doing a good job so far with this using Scholastic News articles. Writing: We are publishing opinion writing this week and will be showcasing it to our classmates later this week. We will then transition into persuasive writing. School will be in session for a half day attendance on Wednesday November 27. We will dismiss at 12:30 No School November 28 - December 1. Picture Day is Tuesday Oct 8!!! Students need to bring picture order forms and money with them to pictures. Our class will be taking their photos at 8:45 so that will be nice before they get all messy for the day. :)

Writing- This week students are wrapping up their narrative stories. On Friday, we will have a writing showcase where they will have an opportunity to rotate thru the other 4th grade classes to read their work. The kids really seem to enjoy this activity. This week is World Space Week so we will do several things with space this week. Also, remember that 4th grade is having a Rube Goldberg day on Oct 17.
